A large amount of knowledge brings them undoubted benefits.

By swimming, young people acquire not only professional skills, but also moral values that are traditional for sailors. So, during Operation Sail in 1984, the crew of the Gift of Youth refused a sure victory in the regatta of large sailboats, coming to the aid of the crew of a yacht on which a fire broke out.

"We want to educate a cadre of sailors who have thoroughly experienced the taste of this profession," says Captain Michal Rolia, a teacher at the Gdynia Higher Maritime School. — Therefore, we try, although it is not easy to do this with the specialization of the school, so that our graduates, if necessary, can cope with the work of a navigator pilot, as well as on shore, for example, in shipping companies, forwarding companies, and in the maritime education system. Such a large amount of knowledge passed on to our cadets is of undoubted benefit to them. Even in the most difficult years for the maritime economy of our country, the sailors had no trouble finding employment. The diplomas of our universities enjoy a good reputation in the global shipping industry, which makes it much easier for their graduates to hire foreign ships.

A multi-stage system of retraining in specialized or postgraduate courses, as well as practical exercises, plays a huge role in improving knowledge and qualifications. Future captains improve their practical skills on special models. Such exercises are conducted on Lake Yezerak in the Ilava region. There, they have three models of vessels at their disposal, which are exact copies (on a scale of 1:24) of a tanker with a gross tonnage of more than 100 thousand tons, a universal vessel for general cargo with a cargo capacity of 60 thousand tons and an ocean roller. Each model accurately reproduces the ratio of drive power to displacement, the shape of the rudder pen, and the parameters of the propeller. The model's crew consists of two cadets, one of whom gives commands, and the other maintains the modeling devices. The exercises are conducted under the supervision of an instructor.

"The purpose of the model exercises," says long—range captain Andrzej Bogutsky, "is to accelerate the process of mastering the skills of safe maneuvering of vessels with specific properties inherent in large—tonnage vessels and container ships. By traditional methods, such skills are acquired through many years of practice, with us - in just six days of intensive preparation. The use of the model allows not only to accelerate the mastery of this art, but also, just as importantly, to test the suitability of sailors to command such vessels.

In less than 10 years, the center in Ilava has trained about 500 candidates for captains. They sail on many Polish and foreign ships and successfully pass the exam in the most difficult conditions.

The training program of Polish maritime universities meets the highest requirements. As IMO experts have repeatedly noted, "if all countries made the same efforts in training officers and did it in the same way as Poland does, then the issue of maritime safety would be resolved." The level of the Polish marine education system is also indicated by the fact that among the 150 teachers of the International Maritime University in Malmo, 10 are Polish professors: specialists in satellite navigation, maritime law, economics, computer science, mechanics and navigation.

The training program at all higher and secondary naval schools in Poland is constantly being improved with the progress of world technology. The equipment of classrooms and laboratories is not inferior to that of similar educational institutions in much richer countries. Therefore, Polish naval schools do not lack those who want to study there, and not only from Poland. A large group of students are citizens of Czechoslovakia, Vietnam, Nigeria, Senegal, Cuba, Zaire, India, Yemen, Ethiopia.

Poland pays great attention to the technical equipment of maritime educational institutions. Cadets have at their disposal not only modern equipment, but also sophisticated simulators that effectively help improve the quality of training. https://xbae.ch/
